App Store Cracks Down on “Overtly Sexual” Apps

Author: admin | Filed under: Apple News, Apps

Clean iTunes[UPDATED: Mon - Feb 22, 2010 @ 10:00am Mountain time] Apple has made a move recently at making the App store more family friendly. They are looking to remove all “Overtly Sexual Content” as they put it, but no clear definition was given. There are numerous apps in the App Store that are nothing more than pornography deliverers. We have also seen an influx of the number of “Digitial Girlfriends” available via the App Store. However, these days are numbered as Apple has recently sent a letter out to all developers of these apps, warning them that these apps are thus forth, no longer appropriate for the App store.

“The App Store continues to evolve, and as such, we are constantly refining our guidelines. Your application, Wobble iBoobs (Premium Uncensored), contains content that we had originally believed to be suitable for distribution. However, we have recently received numerous complaints from our customers about this type of content, and have changed our guidelines appropriately.”

Jon Atherton, the developer of a title called Wobble iBoobs, recently received the above letter.

Other apps have disappeared from the App Store without trace like Exotic Positions or Sexy Women. But there are still other “adult” content apps that remain in the store. We will see if Apple decides to continue pursuing the deletion of these apps further or if they were looking for a simple way to eliminate the worst ones. Either way, this will likely cause minor controversy for the next few months, but will quickly slide under the rug and be forgotten.

[UPDATE: Since the time that we originally posted this article, over 5,000 apps have been removed from the App store. It is expected that at least 4,000 or more were due to this change in policy, or nearly 3% of the current apps on the app store have been removed because of this.]
